Best Wispr Flow Alternatives in 2026
Five alternatives compared on price, offline mode, AI clean-up and how much the app gets to see.
Quick answer
The best Wispr Flow alternative depends on why you are leaving. For the same cloud workflow from a third of the price, Shepit (our app) starts at $4.99 a month with 30 free minutes. For offline dictation, Superwhisper runs local Whisper models free. For a like-for-like rival on four platforms, Aqua Voice costs $10-12 a month. Apple Dictation is free, and VoiceInk is a one-time $25. Wispr Flow Pro is $15 a month.
Wispr Flow is the biggest name in Mac dictation, and for good reason: it learns how you write, runs on four platforms and needs almost no setup. But at $15 a month, with every word going through the cloud, it is not the right fit for everyone. I compared five alternatives on the things that usually send people looking: price, offline mode and how much the app gets to see.
Why people look for alternatives
Wispr Flow does a lot right. Its personal dictionary learns new words on its own, Styles adapt the tone per app, and Context Awareness uses text from the active window, so a Slack reply comes out differently from an email. Four things still send people searching:
- Price. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, and there is no lifetime option. The free plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop. The alternatives below range from free to a one-time $25.
- Cloud only. Wispr's own data controls page says transcription always happens in the cloud. No connection, no dictation.
- What the app sees. With Context Awareness on, Wispr Flow reads text from the window you are typing in, along with the app name. You can switch it off, but some people prefer an app that only ever hears their voice.
- More than you need. Notetaker, Snippets, Styles and team plans are useful, and also a lot of product for someone who wants to dictate a Slack reply.
To be fair on privacy: Wispr Flow holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, says it has zero-retention agreements with its AI providers, and offers a HIPAA business associate agreement on its team plans. The question is less whether it is careful and more whether you want your audio and screen text in anyone's cloud.
Shepit
Disclosure: Shepit is our app, and I am its product manager.
Shepit is the closest alternative in workflow and the cheapest in price: hold a key, speak, release, and the text lands in any Mac app. Like Wispr Flow it transcribes in the cloud, so it needs internet. Unlike Wispr Flow it does not read your screen: the only context it uses is which app is active, and that only picks the polish style.
The optional AI clean-up adds punctuation, fixes misheard words and smooths out self-corrections; it is off by default, set per app and included on every plan. A dictionary of up to 100 terms helps with names and jargon, and Shepit adds a term by itself after you correct it in three dictations within 30 days. Free gives 30 minutes a month; Basic is $4.99 a month for 10 hours and Pro $14.99 for unlimited use, plus tax (pricing).
Where Wispr Flow wins: it learns your writing style, it runs on Windows and phones, and it has more features around dictation. Shepit is Mac-only and needs Apple silicon with macOS 26 or later.
Superwhisper
Superwhisper is the alternative for people who leave Wispr Flow because of the cloud. It runs Whisper models locally, free and unlimited, and works fully offline. Pro ($8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime) adds cloud models and AI modes that reshape speech with your own prompts, with optional context from the current app or selected text. Like Wispr Flow, it runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android under one licence.
Where Wispr Flow wins: it works well with no configuration. Superwhisper asks you to choose models and set up modes, and offline its AI clean-up is limited to one English-only local model. My head-to-head is in Superwhisper vs Shepit, and Superwhisper's own rivals are in Best Superwhisper Alternatives.
Aqua Voice
Aqua Voice is the most direct like-for-like rival: cloud-based, context-aware and available on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Its Deep Context feature, which reads what is on screen, is included even on the free plan, and its Privacy Mode promises that nothing is stored on its servers. Pro is $10 a month billed yearly or $12 monthly, below Wispr Flow on both counts; Max, at $19 to $24 a month, adds a real-time mode and voice commands. The free plan includes 1,000 words.
Where Wispr Flow wins: languages. Aqua Voice lists 49, Wispr Flow 100+. If you dictate in a language outside Aqua's list, the decision is made for you.
Apple Dictation
The free baseline is already on your Mac. Apple Dictation has no time limit, adds punctuation automatically and runs on-device for 48 of its 63 language variants, so for most languages your audio never leaves the Mac. There is no AI clean-up, no custom vocabulary and no style adaptation: what you say is what lands.
Where Wispr Flow wins: everything beyond raw transcription. Apple Dictation is enough for short messages; for long emails, the editing afterwards is the price. More no-cost options are in Best Free Dictation Apps for Mac.
VoiceInk
VoiceInk is for people who want to pay once and keep everything local. It is open source (GPL-3.0), runs Whisper, Parakeet and other models on your Mac, and costs $25 for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with a 7-day trial and no subscription. AI enhancement works with your own API key and sends only text, not audio, or with an on-device option. It needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, and an iPhone version is now available.
Where Wispr Flow wins: polish and learning. VoiceInk is a smaller project, its AI features take setup, and it does not adapt to your writing style. If offline is the point, the other local options are in Best Offline and Private Dictation Apps for Mac.
Every alternative costs less than Wispr Flow Pro; Superwhisper and VoiceInk also work offline.
